Weight Loss Terminology

Have you ever noticed when reading a sentence you come across a single word that you are not familiar with, the whole sentence cannot be understood?

That is never more true than in research and it can be very time consuming having to look up words to figure out what the heck is being said.

Well I decided to create a terminology page to help you with words you might be unfamiliar with. You may come across these particularly when reading about weight loss of a scientific nature.

Here are some words and their meanings to get you started:

Insulin Sensitivity:
If you increase insulin sensitivity you increase the bodies ability to take up glucose

Insulin Insensitivity
The opposite to above ie if you have insulin IN-sensitivity you reduce the ability for the body to uptake glucose from the blood (plasma)

Insulin resistance
Means the same as insulin insensitivity.

Example of use:
Physical activity has a beneficial effect on insulin sensitivity in normal as well as insulin resistant populations.

Postprandial
Postprandial means after eating a meal while preprandial is before a meal. This term is often used in the context of blood sugar (or blood glucose) levels
